Forensic Fire Science and Technology Laboratories
Our Forensic Fire Science and Technology Laboratories are fully equipped with "state-of-the art" apparatus to scientifically test and evaluate evidence in fire and explosion cases, as well as to record the testing and experimentation processes for demonstration to a client, the court and a jury.

Our facility is one of the largest and most complete Forensic Fire Science Laboratory in the world. This laboratory, on a daily basis, uses the most modern and up-to-date equipment, techniques, and computer databases to conduct fire and flammability standards testing and fire experiments. We can tailor a testing protocol to meet your specific needs.

We regularly provide our clients with:

Fire Codes and Standards Testing
Flammable Properties of Materials
Reactions of Materials to Heat
Testing of Gas and Electrical Appliances
Electrical Testing
Properties of Ignitable Liquids
Full Scale Fire Testing
Courtroom Video Demonstrations

In addition to these standard tests which use specific and regulated apparatus we regularly perform tests to evaluate other fire properties of materials, fire performance of fire detection equipment, ignition tests, fire spread tests, engine temperature tests, and chemical tests. We are also often called to evaluate the conclusions and opinions of others. Testing is one of the many tools we use to do this. It is through testing that we are often able to demonstrate that our conclusions and opinions are consistent with the laws of
chemistry and physics.

Some examples of tests done regularly in our labs:

Closed Cup Flash Point
Open Cup Flash Point
Pensky-Martins Flash Point
Auto-ignition Temperature (solids and liquids)
Automobile Interior Finish Flame Spread Rate (FMVSS 302)
Fabric Flammability
Children's Clothing Flammability
Melting Temperature Test

The John A. Kennedy and Associates staff is made up of trained, expert photographers who are able to document the testing process through still photography and video. Our facility is equipped with a modern video studio designed to produce accurate video records of testing and edit professional courtroom demonstrations.

Evidence Examination and Control
Our laboratory regularly handles large quantities of valuable physical evidence and we maintain a detailed and thorough evidence inventory and secure storage system. This system is designed to ensure the integrity of the "chain of custody" of each item of physical evidence while in our possession.
