The History of John A. Kennedy & Associates

John Kennedy, the founder of John A. Kennedy and Associates, is now retired. In his more than fifty year career as the foremost fire and explosion investigator, he built the first and most prestigious fire investigation company in the world, John A. Kennedy and Associates, Inc.

His innovations in fire scene technology, fire pattern analysis, fire investigation methodology and fire investigator training and education, revolutionized the fire and explosion investigation industry in the 1950's, 60's, 70's and 80's.

Literally thousands of fire investigators got their "basic training" from courses originated and taught by John Kennedy, at such schools as the Purdue Arson Seminar, the Ohio State Arson Seminar, the programs of the International Association of Arson Investigators and the National Association of Fire Investigators.

His early textbooks, Fire and Arson Investigating, (1958) and Fire and Arson Investigation (1962, 1972) represent the first truly systematic and scientific texts for fire investigation science and technology of their time. These, along with his later textbooks, Fires and Explosions Determining Cause and Origin, (1985) and Explosion Investigation and Analysis - Kennedy on Explosions (1990) have become the basis for much of modern fire investigation science.

Many of the theories, procedures and techniques originated and popularized by John Kennedy are now considered the standard procedures of fire and explosion investigation. With a background in the insurance investigation industry and as a Commander in United States Naval Intelligence, John Kennedy founded John A. Kennedy and Associates in April of 1955. Up until that time there had never been a firm, anywhere in the world, devoted particularly to the investigation and analysis of fire and explosion incidents.

His legacy to the fire and explosion investigation and fire litigation communities includes the training and development of thousands of today's fire investigators, especially the current experts of John A. Kennedy and Associates.

After fifty years of pioneering work in the Fire Investigation field, John Kennedy retired from Fire Investigation. He is still active in the industry as President of the National Association of Fire Investigators.
